Find Your Joy Taster
Lesson Two
In this lesson, you will paint two paintings. Paint whatever kinds of things you love painting, such as florals, landscapes, portraits, or anything else you always paint.
In the first painting, use materials and tools you don’t usually use. Try colors you don’t normally use, and use tools you don’t usually use. I used paint scrapers and palette knives. Notice how you feel. In the second painting, use tools you typically use and incorporate tools that you enjoyed from the first painting into this new practice.
I forgot the second part of the assignment: use tools you liked from the first painting. I haven’t painted much in watercolor for the last several months, as all my “creative time” was used in prepping for the show. I was so excited to have dedicated time to paint that I grabbed my brushes and went for it. My goal was to paint loosely and have fun. Mission accomplished!
For the first painting, I used acrylics and the wallpaper again, allowing me to paint much bigger than usual. I also used this very dark palette again. It’s actually the same palette I used in the second watercolor painting, but it’s much darker and more intense in acrylics. That’s because acrylics are opaque, so the light doesn’t shine through the paper.
Painting with acrylics is like learning a foreign language. Exciting and sometimes frustrating. None of my watercolor “tricks” work!
At first, I liked this darker palette, mainly because it was a change—novelty is always fun. But I’m quickly growing tired of these dark colors. I’m going to switch out the palette for lessons three and four.
The official Find Your Joy Taster 2024 wrapped up this weekend, but it will continue here until I paint through the four lessons. If you signed up for the course, the lessons are up until Saturday, Sept. 14th.
As you’ll see, I forgot to turn my camera horizontally. I'm sorry for the black lines on the sides. I’m a slow learner when it comes to video.
I’d love to see how lessons one and two turned out for you. Please leave a picture here, and comment on the Cedar Valley Painters Facebook page.
Happy painting!
